History
The 2022/23 season marked the beginning of a new era at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag taking charge for his first season. After a disappointing sixth-place finish the previous year, United were looking to rebuild and restore some stability.
The season ultimately proved a major step forward. United finished 3rd in the Premier League, reached the FA Cup final, reached the Europa League quarter-finals, and, most importantly, won the EFL Cup — their first major trophy since 2017.
Key Players
Marcus Rashford
Rashford was the outstanding attacking player of the season.
After a difficult 2021/22 campaign, he rediscovered his confidence and produced 30 goals in allcompetitions, including 17 Premier League goals. He became United's leading scorer and one of the most dangerous forwards in England.
His form after the World Cup was particularly impressive.
Bruno Fernandes
Bruno remained the creative heartbeat of the team.
He played 37 Premier League matches, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists. Across all competitions he made 59 appearances, demonstrating just how important he was to Ten Hag.
His work rate, creativity and leadership made him one of the most influential players in the squad.
Casemiro
Perhaps the most important signing of the season.
Casemiro brought experience, defensive strength and a winning mentality from Real Madrid. He made 28 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals, and became the midfield shield United had been missing for years.
He also scored in the Carabao Cup final.
Lisandro Martínez
The Argentine centre-back quickly became a fan favourite.
Despite concerns about his height for a Premier League centre-back, Martínez's aggression, passing ability and reading of the game made him an excellent partner for Raphaël Varane.
He made 27 league appearances and helped give United a much more aggressive defensive identity.
David de Gea
De Gea remained United's first-choice goalkeeper and played every minute of the Premier Leagueseason.
He made 38 league appearances and won the Premier League GoldenGlove after keeping 17 clean sheets.
Luke Shaw
Shaw enjoyed an excellent season and became increasingly important under Ten Hag.
He made 31 league appearances, scoring once and providing two assists. He was also capable of playing at centre-back when required.
Christian Eriksen
Eriksen was another important summer arrival.
His passing range and intelligence added quality to United's midfield, and he formed an effective partnership with Casemiro before an ankle injury temporarily disrupted his season.
He finished with 28 Premier League appearancesand eight assists.
His departure allowed Ten Hag to build the attack around a different group of players, with Rashford subsequently enjoying his best season in years.
