Managed by Dutch legend Marco van Basten, the Netherlands were drawn into an extremely difficult Group C alongside Italy, France and Romania.
They were spectacular in the group:
Netherlands 3–0 Italy — 9 June 2008
Netherlands 4–1 France — 13 June 2008
Netherlands 2–0 Romania — 17 June 2008
They therefore finished 1st with three wins from three, scoring 9 goals and conceding just 1.
Unfortunately, the Dutch then met Russia in the quarter-final. Guus Hiddink's Russian side won 3–1 after extra time, ending what had looked like a potential championship-winning campaign.
Key players
Wesley Sneijder — No. 10 The Real Madrid midfielder was arguably the star of the tournament for Holland. He scored against both Italy and France and was at the centre of their attacking play.
Arjen Robben — No. 11 One of the world's most dangerous wingers. His acceleration and left-footed cutting inside made him a major threat.
Ruud van Nistelrooy — No. 9 The experienced Real Madrid striker led the line and scored against Italy and Russia.
