History

2020 was an important transition year for Germany. Joachim Löw was still manager, Manuel Neuer remained captain, and the side was trying to rebuild after the disastrous 2018 World Cup. The delayed Euro 2020 would ultimately be played in 2021 because of COVID-19, so Germany's actual competitive football in 2020 centred on the UEFA Nations League.

The 2020 story

Germany played six Nations League matches in League A, Group 4:

The campaign started reasonably well but Germany repeatedly struggled to close games out. The most damaging moment came on 17 November 2020, when Spain demolished Germany 6–0 in Seville. Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick, while Germany produced an unusually poor performance. It was Germany's heaviest competitive defeat and became a major low point of the Löw era.

Interestingly, Manuel Neuer broke the German goalkeeper appearance record during that match, but the milestone was overshadowed by the result.

Key players

Manuel Neuer — goalkeeper & captain
Still the undisputed No.1 and one of the world's elite goalkeepers. He provided leadership during a period of considerable instability.

Toni Kroos — central midfielder
The Real Madrid star remained Germany's principal controller and passer. He was captain in several of the 2020 matches.

Joshua Kimmich — midfielder/right-back
Already becoming one of Germany's most important players. His versatility, energy and pressing made him central to Löw's developing side.

Leon Goretzka — midfielder
A powerful box-to-box presence and increasingly important alongside Kimmich and Kroos.

Timo Werner — striker
Probably Germany's most productive attacking player in 2020. He scored against Spain in September and twice against Ukraine in November.

Serge Gnabry — forward
A key attacking threat following his outstanding development at Bayern Munich.

Leroy Sané — winger
Returned from his long-term knee injury and provided Germany with pace and direct attacking ability.

Antonio Rüdiger — defender
One of the regular defensive leaders and, particularly in the latter part of the year, an important physical presence at the back.

Matthias Ginter — defender
A highly trusted Löw player who featured regularly in the back three/four.

Kai Havertz — attacking midfielder/forward
One of the generation's biggest young talents. He had just moved from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea in 2020.

Why 2020 matters historically

The year effectively marked the end of Löw's rebuilding experiment. Germany had failed to reproduce the dominance of the 2010–2014 generation, and the 6–0 defeat to Spain exposed the team's structural problems.

Löw nevertheless remained in charge for Euro 2020, where he brought Mats Hummels and Thomas Müller back into the squad after previously excluding them during the rebuild. UEFA specifically identified Müller as a key player for the tournament.

In short: Germany's 2020 team was a fascinating mixture of the old guard (Neuer, Kroos, Müller/Hummels returning) and the new generation (Kimmich, Goretzka, Gnabry, Sané, Werner, Havertz). It was a transitional side that had enormous talent but had not yet found the tactical and defensive stability needed to challenge Europe's best.

How we verify authenticity

Every shirt is inspected by hand before it is listed. We check construction, neck and wash labels, stitching, sponsor and badge application, and the manufacturer product code against period-correct examples. Only shirts that pass are photographed, graded and added to the Vault. If a shirt is not an authentic original, we do not sell it.

Condition and sizing

These shirts are vintage, aged and normally used, so they will almost always show some degree of wear. Each listing carries a condition grade out of ten and any notable fault is called out in the description. Sizing on older shirts differs from modern sizing — always go by the pit-to-pit and length measurements listed, not the size on the label.

Why this shirt costs what it costs

Original, not a reproduction

A reproduction and an original can look identical in a listing photo. Drag the slider to see the difference, and what we checked on this exact shirt before it was listed.

  1. Embroidered crest with real stitch texture, never a flat print
  2. Period-correct fabric weave, weight and cut for the season
  3. Woven sponsor lettering applied the way that era did it

Before you buy

Will it fit me?

Go by the flat measurements in the description, not the size on the label. Sizing on older shirts is nothing like modern sizing. Lay a shirt you already own flat, measure pit to pit and length, and compare. Not sure? Send us the listing and we will tell you honestly.

What condition is it in?

This shirt is vintage, aged and normally used, so it will show some degree of wear. The condition grade out of ten and any notable fault are stated in the description above. Nothing is hidden in the photographs.

What makes it an original?

Every shirt is an authentic original from its season, found and checked by hand before it is listed. Stock is limited and often a single piece, so when one sells it is usually gone for good.

How do I know it is authentic?

Every shirt is inspected by hand before listing: construction, neck and wash labels, stitching, sponsor and badge application, and the manufacturer product code, all against period-correct examples. If a shirt is not an authentic original, we do not sell it.

When will it arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 2 working days from Spain, fully tracked and insured at our expense. EU standard tracked is €15.99 up to 2 kg with estimated delivery in 3–5 days. Australia, Japan and Singapore are €19.95 for one shirt, €24.95 for two and €29.95 for three or four, with estimated delivery in 6–8 working days.

What if it is not right?

You have 7 days from delivery to request a return. Send it back unworn and in the same condition, with tags intact, and we refund the full purchase price. We do not accept refunds or exchanges for change of mind or incorrect sizing, so please review your purchase carefully before ordering. If it arrives damaged or not as described, we cover the return postage too.

Every shirt in the Matchday Vault is an authentic original — sourced, inspected and graded by hand, and photographed in detail before it is listed. No replicas. No modern reproductions. Ever.
