History
The 2018/19 season was particularly significant for Hamburger SV because it was the club's first ever season outside the Bundesliga after 55 consecutive seasons in Germany's top division. They finished 4th in the 2. Bundesliga, missing promotion, while reaching the DFB-Pokal semi-finals.
Key players
Pierre-Michel Lasogga – the principal goalscorer, with 13 league goals and 16 in all competitions.
Rick van Drongelen – outstanding young Dutch centre-back; played 34 league matches, almost every available minute.
Douglas Santos – Brazilian left-back and one of the team's most consistent performers, making 33 league appearances.
Julian Pollersbeck – first-choice goalkeeper, playing 31 league matches.
Gotoku Sakai – experienced Japanese defender and an important leader.
Lewis Holtby – experienced creative midfielder.
Aaron Hunt – another senior figure and important creative player.
One particularly nice detail on the shirt is "Nur der HSV" ("Only HSV") printed at the back of the neck. The shirt used adidas ClimaLite fabric.
Why this shirt is collectible
For a football-shirt collection, the 2018/19 away shirt is more historically interesting than an ordinary HSV season shirt, because it represents the club's first season in the second division and deliberately references the 1983 European Cup-winning side.
It is therefore a nice combination of HSV's greatest era (1983) and one of its most difficult modern moments — relegation from the Bundesliga in 2018.
