History
The 2017/18 season was one of Atlético Madrid's most successful European campaigns under Diego Simeone. They finished second in La Liga and, after dropping into the Europa League from the Champions League, went on to win the competition for the third time in club history.
Europa League — the defining achievement
Atlético started the season in the Champions League, but finished third in their group behind Roma and Chelsea. That sent them into the Europa League knockout stages.
They then went on an impressive run:
Round of 32: Copenhagen — won 5–1 on aggregate
Round of 16: Lokomotiv Moscow — won 8–1
Quarter-final: Sporting CP — won 2–1
Semi-final: Arsenal — won 2–1
Final: Marseille — won 3–0
The final was played in Lyon on 16 May 2018.
Marseille 0–3 Atlético Madrid
This became the defining match of the season.
Antoine Griezmann scored twice, followed by Gabi late in the game.
Griezmann's first came after a Gabi assist, while his second was a superb chipped finish early in the second half. Gabi then completed the victory in the 89th minute.
Atlético finished their Europa League campaign with 20 goals scored and only four conceded in nine matches.
It was Atlético's third Europa League title, following victories in 2010 and 2012.
Key Players
Antoine Griezmann
The star of the season
Griezmann was the team's most important attacking player.
In the Europa League alone he scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists, including his two goals in the final. He was subsequently named Europa League Player of the Season.
His performance in Lyon was particularly important: he was named Man of the Match after scoring both of Atlético's first two goals.
He was at the centre of Atlético's attack, combining intelligent movement, technical ability and finishing.
Diego Godín
Defensive leader
Godín was the heart of Simeone's defence and one of the defining Atlético players of the era.
He was one of the three nominees for Europa League Player of the Season, alongside Griezmann and Marseille's Dimitri Payet. Atlético conceded only four goals throughout their nine Europa League matches, and Godín played every minute of eight of those games.
His partnership with José María Giménez was one of the foundations of the team.
Jan Oblak
Elite goalkeeper
Oblak had developed into one of Europe's best goalkeepers.
His importance was especially obvious during the Europa League knockout rounds. In the semi-final first leg against Arsenal, Atlético were reduced to ten men for most of the match but managed a 1–1 draw, with Oblak making crucial saves.
For a team built around defensive solidity, having Oblak behind Godín and Giménez was an enormous advantage.
Koke
Koke was the technical brain of Simeone's midfield.
He provided passing, creativity and tactical intelligence while also doing the defensive work expected in Simeone's system.
He was particularly important in the Europa League final, providing the assist for Griezmann's second goal.
Saúl Ñíguez
Saúl had become one of Atlético's most complete midfielders.
He could play centrally, move forward to support the attack and contribute defensively.
He scored three goals in the Europa League and was one of the most important members of Simeone's midfield.
Thomas Partey
Partey was increasingly establishing himself as a major first-team player.
His physicality, ball carrying and versatility made him particularly useful in Simeone's midfield.
He made 40 appearances across all competitions during the season.
Gabi
Captain
Gabi was the embodiment of Simeone's Atlético.
He wasn't necessarily the most technically gifted player in the squad, but his leadership, tactical discipline and work rate made him enormously important.
And he had the perfect ending to the European campaign: he scored Atlético's third goal in the Europa League final.
Diego Costa
January return
One of the biggest stories of the season was the return of Diego Costa.
Because Atlético were under a transfer registration ban, Costa could not play for them until January 2018. Once he returned, he immediately provided the physical presence and aggression that had made him so dangerous during his first spell.
He scored the goal that sent Atlético into the Europa League final against Arsenal in the semi-final second leg.
His return alongside Griezmann gave Atlético a formidable strike partnership.
Fernando Torres
The legendary Atlético academy graduate was still at the club.
Torres played a reduced role but remained an important figure and scored his 127th official goal for Atlético against Levante in April 2018, moving into fifth place among the club's all-time scorers at the time.
It was also his final season with Atlético.
Filipe Luís
One of the best left-backs of the Simeone era.
Filipe Luís provided defensive reliability but was also capable of getting forward and contributing to attacks.
His partnership with Koke and Griezmann on the left was an important component of Atlético's attacking play.
Juanfran
The veteran right-back was another key member of the Simeone dynasty.
Juanfran's experience, defensive discipline and ability to deliver crosses made him a natural fit for the system.
