History
The 2021/22 season was one of the most significant transitional seasons in modern Barcelona history. It was the club's first season without Lionel Messi, who left for Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021 after his contract expired.
Barcelona began the season under Ronald Koeman, but a poor run of results left them ninth in La Liga after a defeat at Rayo Vallecano in October. Koeman was dismissed and club legend Xavi Hernández returned to Barcelona as head coach in November.
Xavi gradually transformed the team's fortunes. Barcelona went on a 15-match unbeaten run in all competitions and produced one of the season's most memorable results by beating Real Madrid 4–0 at the Santiago Bernabéu in March 2022.
Ultimately, however, the improvement came too late to challenge seriously for the title. Barça finished 2nd in La Liga, behind Real Madrid, securing Champions League qualification for the following season.
Key players
Pedri
The young midfielder became one of the team's most important players despite missing significant time through injury. His technical ability and composure made him central to Xavi's rebuilding project.
Frenkie de Jong
A major part of the midfield and increasingly influential under Xavi. He was particularly impressive during the second half of the season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Signed from Arsenal in January and immediately transformed the attack. He scored 11 La Liga goals despite arriving halfway through the campaign.
Memphis Depay
Barcelona's leading league scorer, with 12 La Liga goals. He was one of the principal attacking outlets during the difficult first half of the season.
Ronald Araújo
Developed into one of Barça's most important defenders. His pace, strength and one-on-one defending made him a cornerstone of Xavi's emerging side.
Gavi
The 17-year-old midfielder made his breakthrough at senior level and quickly became an important member of the first team.
Sergio Busquets
Still the midfield anchor. Barcelona's official statistics show that Busquets played more minutes than any other Barça player in La Liga that season and was also the club's leading passer.
Marc-André ter Stegen
Remained Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper and played a major role as the defence stabilised under Xavi.
Jordi Alba & Gerard Piqué
The two veterans remained important figures in the side during this transitional season.
Ousmane Dembélé
His future at the club was uncertain for much of the campaign, but he became increasingly influential under Xavi, particularly in the second half of the season.

You have 7 days from delivery to request a return. The shirt must come back unworn and in the same condition it was sent, with all tags intact. Return postage is paid by the buyer. Once the shirt is received and checked, we refund the full purchase price. We do not accept refunds or exchanges for change of mind or incorrect sizing. We check construction, neck and wash labels, stitching, sponsor and badge application, and the manufacturer product code against period-correct examples. Only shirts that pass are photographed, graded and added to the Vault. If a shirt is not an authentic original, we do not sell it.
Condition and sizing
These shirts are vintage, aged and normally used, so they will almost always show some degree of wear. Each listing carries a condition grade out of ten and any notable fault is called out in the description. Sizing on older shirts differs from modern sizing — always go by the pit-to-pit and length measurements listed, not the size on the label.
