History
The 2020/21 season was one of the most memorable Leeds United seasons of the modern era. After a 16-year absence, Leeds returned to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa and immediately proved they belonged at the top level.
The biggest achievement wasn't simply finishing 9th. Leeds had spent years outside the Premier League and, on returning, immediately finished above established clubs such as Arsenal and Everton, while scoring 62 goals and playing some of the most entertaining football in the division.
It was essentially the peak of the Bielsa era at Leeds: the Championship-winning core remained together, Raphinha and Meslier emerged as major talents, Bamford finally fulfilled his potential, and the team became one of the Premier League's most entertaining sides.
Leeds' 59 points and 9th place finish was particularly impressive because they were newly promoted. It was the club's first Premier League campaign since relegation in 2004.
Bielsa didn't abandon the attacking football that had taken Leeds back into the Premier League. His side played with an extremely aggressive style, using man-oriented pressing, quick passing, intense running and attacking full-backs.
The opening game illustrated exactly what was coming: Leeds lost 4–3 at Liverpool in an extraordinary match at Anfield. Rather than sitting back against the champions, Leeds repeatedly attacked Liverpool.
There were some spectacular results throughout the season:
Leeds finished the season strongly, going six matches unbeaten from March into May and then winning their final four games.
Key Players
Patrick Bamford — Striker
17 goals, 7 assists
Bamford was arguably the most important individual player of the season.
After criticism during his Championship years, he finally established himself as a Premier League striker. He played 38 matches and scored 17 goals, becoming Leeds' leading scorer by a considerable margin.
His movement was particularly important to Bielsa because Bamford wasn't simply a traditional No.9. He constantly moved into space, pressed defenders and linked with the midfield.
Raphinha — Right Winger
Raphinha arrived from Rennes and quickly became one of the most exciting players in the Premier League.
His dribbling, creativity and ability to beat defenders gave Leeds another dimension in attack. His 9 assists were the team's best total.
This was the season when Raphinha began to establish himself as a genuine Premier League star.
Stuart Dallas — Utility Player
Dallas was one of the ultimate Bielsa players.
He could play full-back, wing-back, midfield or on either side of the pitch, and his extraordinary fitness made him almost indispensable.
He played all 38 league games, as did Ayling and Bamford.
His greatest moment came at Manchester City, where he scored both goals in Leeds' incredible 2–1 victory, including the stoppage-time winner.
Jack Harrison — Winger
8 goals, 8 assists
Harrison was another crucial part of Bielsa's attack.
Playing primarily from the left, he developed into an extremely productive winger. His 8 goals and 8 assists demonstrate how important he was to Leeds' attacking output.
He also became famous for his defensive work, tracking back relentlessly under Bielsa.
Kalvin Phillips — Defensive Midfielder
Phillips was the heart of Bielsa's midfield.
Nicknamed "The Yorkshire Pirlo", he operated as the team's deep midfielder and was responsible for breaking up attacks, recovering possession and starting Leeds' attacking moves.
He made 29 league appearances, despite missing time through injury, and finished the season with 10 yellow cards.
His performances earned him international recognition and ultimately a place in England's Euro 2020 squad.
Luke Ayling — Right-back
Ayling was another hugely important member of the side.
He played all 38 Premier League matches, making him one of Bielsa's most trusted players. He wasn't a conventional defensive full-back: Bielsa frequently encouraged him to push forward and effectively become an additional attacking player.
He was also the club's leading passer and made 108 tackles, the most for Leeds that season.
Illan Meslier — Goalkeeper
The 20-year-old Meslier became Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League.
He played 35 league games and quickly demonstrated why Leeds regarded him as one of Europe's promising young goalkeepers.
His ability with the ball at his feet was especially valuable in Bielsa's system.
Mateusz Klich — Midfielder
Klich was one of Bielsa's most trusted midfielders.
He had been transformed by Bielsa after struggling to establish himself at Leeds previously. His energy, passing and willingness to press made him a perfect fit for the system.
He played 35 league matches, scoring four goals and providing five assists.
Ezgjan Alioski — Left-back/Winger
Alioski was another classic Bielsa player: versatile, energetic and aggressive.
He could operate as a left-back or winger and made 38 appearances according to Leeds' season statistics.
His personality also made him one of the more memorable characters in that Leeds team.
Rodrigo — Forward/Midfielder
Leeds made Rodrigo their record signing in 2020, bringing him in from Valencia.
His first season was interrupted by injury and illness, but he still contributed 7 goals in 28 league appearances.
He offered Bielsa something different because he could play as a striker, attacking midfielder or deeper in midfield.
