History
The 2018/19 season was an excellent one for Borussia Mönchengladbach, as the club returned to European football after finishing 5th in the Bundesliga under manager Dieter Hecking.
It was an interesting season because Gladbach actually started extremely strongly. At one point they climbed as high as 2nd, behind Borussia Dortmund, and were being discussed as potential title challengers.
However, their form deteriorated during the second half of the season. They eventually dropped to fifth, although that was still enough to secure Europa League football.
Key Players
Thorgan Hazard
Hazard was the star of the team.
He was one of the Bundesliga's most productive attacking players.
He was usually deployed from the left or as an attacking forward, combining dribbling, pace and creativity.
2018/19 was arguably Hazard's best season at Gladbach, and his performances eventually earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund in summer 2019.
Alassane Pléa
Pléa was another huge success. Signed from Nice in summer 2018, the French striker immediately became Gladbach's leading scorer, scoring 12 Bundesliga goals in his debut season.
His physicality, movement and ability to finish made him an excellent partner for Hazard.
Yann Sommer
Sommer was the team's dependable goalkeeper and one of the most important players behind their strong defensive record.
He started all 34 Bundesliga matches, playing every minute of the campaign. Gladbach conceded just 42 goals, giving them the sixth-best defensive record in the league.
He was particularly impressive during Gladbach's excellent first half of the season; Sky highlighted his save percentage and clean-sheet record as major reasons for their success.
Nico Elvedi
The 21-year-old Swiss centre-back had a major breakthrough season.
He played 30 Bundesliga matches, starting all 30, and became an increasingly important part of Gladbach's defence.
His pace and ability to defend in space were particularly useful in Hecking's system.
Matthias Ginter
The former Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender was another key member of the back line.
He started 27 Bundesliga matches and played 2,379 minutes.
Ginter's passing ability and composure complemented Elvedi very well.
Florian Neuhaus
One of the most exciting young players in the squad.
Neuhaus, only 21, made 32 Bundesliga appearances, including 25 starts.
His 8 assists were particularly impressive for a young central midfielder.
This was the season in which Neuhaus really began establishing himself as a major German midfield prospect.
