History
This is a particularly nice Ajax shirt because it connects a modern young Ajax side with the club's legendary 1994/95 Champions League-winning team.
It's a much more adventurous design than Ajax's traditional red-and-white home shirt, but the 1994/95 connection gives it considerable historical appeal.
Ajax finished 2nd in the Eredivisie, with 79 points, scoring an impressive 89 goals and conceding just 33.
Unfortunately, it was a trophyless season. The more important story, however, was the emergence of a remarkable group of young players who would become the core of Ajax's spectacular 2018/19 Champions League run.
Key players David Neres — No. 7
Neres was Ajax's leading Eredivisie scorer with 14 goals. He was also named Eredivisie Talent of the Year
His combination of speed, dribbling and finishing made him one of the most exciting players in Dutch football.
Hakim Ziyech — No. 10
The creative superstar of the side. Ziyech scored 9 Eredivisie goals and was the team's primary creative force. He would become one of the defining players of Ajax's 2018/19 Champions League campaign.
Matthijs de Ligt — No. 4
De Ligt was still a teenager but had already become one of Ajax's most important defenders. He played 39 official matches, the most of any Ajax player that season alongside Donny van de Beek and Ziyech.
The following season he captained Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals and won the Golden Boy award.
Frenkie de Jong — No. 21
De Jong made 26 official appearances during 2017/18 and was increasingly becoming an important part of the midfield.
The following season he became one of the biggest young stars in European football before moving to Barcelona.
Donny van de Beek — No. 6
Van de Beek was another key young midfielder.
He made 39 official appearances, scored 11 Eredivisie goals.
His performances in 2018/19 would make him another major name in Ajax's famous Champions League run.
André Onana — No. 24
The goalkeeper who would become a huge part of Ajax's subsequent Champions League success. Onana played 38 official matches, second only to the trio of De Ligt, Van de Beek and Ziyech.
