History
The 2016/17 season was a fascinating transitional year for Paris Saint-Germain. It was the first season after Zlatan Ibrahimović's departure, with Unai Emery replacing Laurent Blanc as manager. PSG remained one of Europe's strongest sides, but their dominance of French football finally ended as Monaco won Ligue 1.
PSG began the campaign under Spanish coach Unai Emery, who had arrived after an extremely successful spell at Sevilla.
The biggest change was up front. Zlatan Ibrahimović had left for Manchester United, so Edinson Cavani finally became PSG's undisputed central striker.
And Cavani responded brilliantly.
He scored 49 goals in 50 official matches, including 35 Ligue 1 goals, making 2016/17 one of the great individual scoring seasons in PSG history.
That was significant because PSG had won the previous four consecutive Ligue 1 titles. Monaco's emergence, with players such as Kylian Mbappé, Bernardo Silva, Radamel Falcao and Fabinho, finally broke PSG's domestic monopoly.
Key players
Edinson Cavani — the star
Position: Centre-forward 2016/17: 49 goals in 50 matches
This was Cavani's defining PSG season.
With Ibrahimović gone, he moved into his preferred central striker role and exploded.
His 35 Ligue 1 goals made him the league's top scorer, while his 49 goals in all competitions made him one of Europe's most prolific strikers. PSG later described 2016/17 as a record-filled season for Cavani.
For a PSG shirt from this season, Cavani is unquestionably the key player associated with it.
Ángel Di María
Di María was another hugely important attacking player.
He scored twice against Barcelona in the famous 4–0 first leg, including a spectacular free-kick.
He was particularly dangerous cutting in from the right and combining with Cavani.
Marco Verratti
Verratti was the technical heart of the midfield.
Still only 24, he had already become one of Europe's elite deep-lying midfielders.
His ability to receive the ball under pressure, turn away from opponents and dictate PSG's possession was central to Emery's system.
Thiago Silva
Captain and centre-back
Thiago Silva remained one of the world's premier defenders.
His leadership was particularly important after Ibrahimović's departure.
He formed the defensive core with Marquinhos, giving PSG an exceptionally talented Brazilian centre-back partnership.
Marquinhos
Marquinhos was 22 but already an established Champions League-level defender.
His combination of speed, positioning and technical ability made him one of the most highly rated young defenders in Europe.
Julian Draxler
Draxler arrived from Wolfsburg in January 2017 and made an immediate impact.
He scored in the 4–0 victory over Barcelona and was an important attacking addition during the second half of the season.
Adrien Rabiot
Rabiot was becoming an increasingly important midfielder.
His size, athleticism and ability to carry the ball gave PSG something different from Verratti.
He was also part of the midfield that produced the extraordinary 4–0 Barcelona performance.
Lucas Moura
Lucas was an important attacking option and one of PSG's longest-serving attacking players.
He contributed goals and assists from the right side and was regularly rotated with Di María.
