History
The 2016/17 season was a memorable transitional campaign for Málaga CF. The club finished 11th in La Liga with 46 points, but the final position doesn't really tell the story of the season. Málaga went through three managers, endured a difficult winter, and then finished with an excellent late-season surge under Míchel.
1. Juande Ramos — August to December 2016
Málaga began the campaign with considerable optimism. Juande Ramos returned for his second spell as manager, while the club had invested heavily in new signings.
The team was particularly strong at La Rosaleda, where they produced several dramatic comebacks.
They won five consecutive home league matches.
A major feature of that run was Sandro Ramírez, who scored in all five victories.
However, away form was poor and the team's performances deteriorated towards the end of 2016. Málaga were also eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Córdoba, prompting Juande Ramos to leave.
Marcelo Romero — December 2016 to March 2017
Club legend Marcelo Romero, nicknamed Gato, took over.
Unfortunately, this period became the low point of the season.
Málaga won only one match during Romero's tenure — a home victory over Las Palmas. The team struggled for results and Romero was dismissed after matchday 26.
At this point, Málaga were in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.
Míchel — March to May 2017
This completely changed the season.
Former Real Madrid and Spain midfielder Míchel González arrived and transformed the team's mentality.
Málaga finished the season comfortably in 11th place, rather than being dragged into the relegation fight.
Key Player
Sandro Ramírez — Striker
The star of the season.
Sandro arrived from Barcelona on a free transfer and had a phenomenal breakthrough campaign.
Pablo Fornals — Midfielder
One of the biggest emerging talents in Spanish football.
Fornals was only 20 years old but became a crucial part of Málaga's midfield.
He played 32 La Liga matches, starting 31, and accumulated more than 2,600 minutes. .
Ignacio Camacho — Defensive midfielder
The midfield leader.
Camacho provided the defensive structure that allowed Fornals and the attacking players to operate further forward.
Carlos Kameni — Goalkeeper
The veteran goalkeeper remained an important figure.
Kameni played 35 La Liga matches, starting every one of them, and accumulated 3,150 minutes.
Roberto Rosales — Right-back
Rosales was another important regular.
He made 32 league appearances, starting all 32, and provided Málaga with considerable experience and attacking width from right-back.
In short: Málaga 2016/17 was a fascinating "end of an era / beginning of a new one" team. Sandro's goals, Fornals' emergence and Míchel's spectacular late-season turnaround made it one of the more memorable Málaga sides of the post-Pellegrini period.
