History
The 2016/17 season was a very important transitional season for Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp. It was Klopp's first full season at Anfield and marked Liverpool's return to the Champions League after a three-year absence.
Liverpool finished fourth, securing Champions League football for the first time since 2014/15. Their 76 points was a significant improvement and showed the direction Klopp was taking the club.
Klopp's first full season
Klopp had taken over in October 2015, but 2016/17 was his first full campaign.
The summer was significant. Klopp began reshaping the squad, bringing in players including:
Sadio Mané — Southampton
Georginio Wijnaldum — Newcastle United
Joël Matip — Schalke
Loris Karius — Mainz
Marko Grujić — Red Star Belgrade
These additions would form an important part of the Liverpool side that eventually became one of Europe's best teams.
Key Players
Sadio Mané
Mané was arguably Liverpool's most important attacking player.
He joined from Southampton in summer 2016 and immediately transformed Liverpool's attack with his pace, directness and pressing.
Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho was Liverpool's other major attacking star.
His long-range shooting, dribbling and creativity made him one of the most dangerous attacking midfielders in England.
He missed significant time with an ankle injury, but still finished as Liverpool's joint-top Premier League scorer with Mané.
Roberto Firmino
Firmino was perhaps the most tactically important member of Klopp's attack.
He played primarily as a false nine, dropping deep to link midfield and attack while creating space for Mané and Coutinho.
His pressing from the front was absolutely central to Klopp's football.
Adam Lallana
Lallana had one of his best seasons at Liverpool.
Klopp used him in a more central role rather than simply as a conventional winger.
His energy, pressing and ability to carry the ball made him an excellent fit for Klopp's system.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Wijnaldum arrived from Newcastle and became an important part of the midfield.
He made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.
His most famous contribution came on the final day against Middlesbrough, when he scored the opening goal in the 3–0 victory that secured fourth place.
He was particularly valuable because he could contribute both defensively and offensively.
James Milner
One of the great stories of the season.
Milner had been a midfielder throughout his career but Klopp converted him into Liverpool's left-back after Alberto Moreno struggled for consistency.
It worked remarkably well.
Milner started 36 Premier League matches and played 3,154 minutes. He also scored 7 league goals — all from penalties.
His experience, fitness and versatility were hugely valuable.
Jordan Henderson
Henderson was Liverpool's captain and an important part of Klopp's midfield.
He made 24 Premier League appearances, starting all 24, but injuries restricted his involvement.
His leadership became increasingly important as Klopp built a new Liverpool side.
Joël Matip
Matip arrived on a free transfer from Schalke and immediately became one of Liverpool's most important defenders.
He made 29 appearances, starting 27 in the Premier League.
His height, composure and ability to carry the ball out of defence made him a very good fit for Klopp.
Dejan Lovren
Lovren had a mixed reputation among supporters after his difficult first seasons at Liverpool, but he became a regular alongside Matip.
He made 29 appearances, starting all 29.
The partnership wasn't perfect, but it provided Liverpool with a reasonably stable central-defensive pairing.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
One of the most interesting details about this squad is that Trent Alexander-Arnold was already part of the first-team squad.
He was only 18 and made his Premier League debut during the season.
At this point, however, he was nowhere near the established superstar he would become.
Liverpool supporters looking back at the 2016/17 squad can therefore see the beginnings of the later Champions League and Premier League-winning side.

These shirts are vintage, aged and normally used, so they will almost always show some degree of wear. Each listing carries a condition grade out of ten and any notable fault is called out in the description.
