History
The 2013/14 season was a solid but ultimately frustrating campaign for TSV 1860 München. The club was trying to return to the Bundesliga after being outside Germany's top division since 2004, but another promotion challenge fell short.
1860 had finished 6th in 2012/13, so there was genuine hope that 2013/14 could be the season they finally pushed towards promotion. Instead, they slipped to seventh and ended the campaign well outside the promotion places.
Key Players
Moritz Stoppelkamp
The standout player of the season.
Stoppelkamp was 1860's creative hub. His 13 assists made him the leading assist provider in the entire 2. Bundesliga.
He was capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or forward and was responsible for a huge proportion of 1860's attacking production.
19 goal contributions was an exceptional return for a team that scored only 38 league goals.
Gábor Király
A very familiar name to football fans.
The veteran Hungarian goalkeeper was 37 years old during the season and remained one of 1860's most important players.
He started all 34 league matches, playing every minute.
Király's famous grey tracksuit trousers were already an iconic part of his image by this point.
He was also the club's best-rated player according to kicker, with an average rating of 3.01.
Yuya Osako
One of the most interesting players in this squad.
Osako joined 1860 from Kashima Antlers in January 2014, so he only spent half a season with the club.
Yet he immediately made an impact, scoring 6 goals in 15 league appearances.
Those six goals made him 1860's joint-leading league scorer, despite arriving halfway through the campaign.
His performances were so impressive that 1. FC Köln signed him after the season, where he would establish himself in the Bundesliga.
Yannick Stark
Stark was one of the main midfielders.
He played 31 league matches, starting 30, and accumulated 2,657 minutes.
His job was more about controlling the midfield and providing energy and defensive work than producing spectacular attacking numbers.
At only 22, he was also one of the younger important players in the side.
Daniel Adlung
Adlung joined 1860 from Energie Cottbus and became another major midfield presence.
He played 33 league matches, starting 30, and scored 4 goals.
His versatility and work rate made him an important part of the midfield.
Guillermo Vallori
The Spanish centre-back was one of the defensive leaders and served as club captain.
Alongside players such as Christopher Schindler and Kai Bülow, Vallori provided the backbone of the defence.
Christopher Schindler
Schindler was a young centre-back who was becoming increasingly important to 1860.
He made 26 appearances, all as a starter, and played 2,330 minutes.
He would eventually become a very significant figure for the club and later enjoyed a successful career in England with Huddersfield Town.
Daniel Bierofka
Bierofka was one of the most recognisable 1860 players of the era.
The Munich-born midfielder was a product of the club's youth system and had also played for Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart.
By 2013/14 he was approaching the end of his playing career, but his experience remained valuable. He made 18 league appearances and scored once.
He would later become 1860's manager.
Bobby Wood
The young American forward made 21 league appearances.
He didn't score in the league, but this was an important developmental period in his career.
Wood would later become a regular for the United States national team and play in the Bundesliga.
Julian Weigl
Weigl was only 18 when he made his 1860 debut during this period.
He only made 14 league appearances in 2013/14, but this was the beginning of what would become a very impressive career.
He subsequently became a key player for Borussia Dortmund, earning Germany caps and becoming known for his ability to control games from deep midfield.
