History
The 2012/13 season was José Mourinho's third and final full season as Real Madrid manager. It followed the extraordinary 2011/12 campaign in which Madrid won La Liga with 100 points and 121 goals, but 2012/13 was a much more complicated season.
Madrid began the season by facing Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup. After losing the first leg 3–2 at Camp Nou, they won 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, with goals from Gonzalo Higuaín and Cristiano Ronaldo, securing Madrid's ninth Supercopa. It was also Luka Modrić's first trophy with the club.
Unlike the previous season, Madrid were unable to maintain their extraordinary league form. They finished second, behind Barcelona.
The campaign was marked by inconsistency and an increasingly difficult relationship between Mourinho and several members of the squad. Nevertheless, Madrid remained one of Europe's strongest teams and produced some spectacular performances.
Key Players
Cristiano Ronaldo
The undisputed star of the team.
Ronaldo remained Madrid's primary attacking weapon and was particularly outstanding in the Champions League.
He finished the 2012/13 Champions League as top scorer with 12 goals, ahead of Robert Lewandowski's 10.
His famous performance at Old Trafford against Manchester United — scoring in both legs of the tie — was one of the season's defining moments.
Mesut Özil
Özil was arguably the team's creative heartbeat.
Playing primarily behind the striker or from the right/central attacking areas, his combination with Ronaldo was one of Madrid's most dangerous weapons.
He finished the Champions League with 5 assists, while also contributing 2 goals.
His vision and final ball were exceptional.
Ángel Di María
Di María provided enormous energy and width.
He could play on either flank, drive forward with the ball and contribute defensively. UEFA recorded him with 5 Champions League assists, matching Özil and Benzema.
He was particularly important in Mourinho's big-game system.
Karim Benzema
Benzema was an important part of the attacking rotation alongside Ronaldo and Higuaín.
In the Champions League he scored 5 goals and supplied 5 assists, demonstrating how much more he contributed than simply finishing chances.
Gonzalo Higuaín
Higuaín remained an important striker despite competing with Benzema for the starting position.
He scored in the Spanish Super Cup and was involved heavily in Mourinho's rotation.
The 2012/13 season ultimately proved to be his final campaign at Real Madrid.
Ramos
Ramos was already becoming the defensive leader of the team.
He could play at centre-back or right-back and was particularly important in the Champions League knockout stages.
UEFA recorded him among Madrid's leading ball recoverers in the competition, with 82 recoveries.
Pepe
Pepe remained one of Mourinho's most trusted defenders.
His combination of aggression, physicality and defensive ability made him a natural partner for Ramos, although Raphaël Varane increasingly challenged him for a starting position.
Raphaël Varane
One of the biggest emerging stars of the season.
Varane's development was spectacular. The young French centre-back became increasingly important and produced outstanding performances against Barcelona and Manchester United.
He was only 19/20 years old but was already being trusted in some of Madrid's biggest matches.
Xabi Alonso
The midfield controller.
Alonso's passing range, positioning and ability to dictate the tempo were fundamental to Mourinho's Madrid.
He formed the deeper midfield partnership with Sami Khedira while players such as Özil, Modrić and Di María provided the attacking creativity.
Luka Modrić
Modrić arrived from Tottenham in the summer of 2012 and initially had to adapt to Mourinho's system.
He scored his first Real Madrid goal against Zaragoza in November and gradually became more influential.
His first season wasn't yet the legendary Modrić we would see later, but it was an important foundation for what followed.
Iker Casillas
Casillas was still club captain and one of the world's elite goalkeepers, but his relationship with Mourinho deteriorated dramatically.
Mourinho eventually dropped him in favour of Diego López, particularly after Casillas suffered a hand injury.
That goalkeeper controversy became one of the defining stories of Madrid's season.
