History
The 2011/12 season is one of the greatest in Chelsea's history. It was a turbulent campaign domestically, but it ended with Chelsea winning both the FA Cup and, most importantly, their first-ever UEFA Champions League.
The sixth-place league finish was Chelsea's lowest since 2001/02, but the cup success completely transformed how the season is remembered.
A season of two halves
Chelsea began the campaign under André Villas-Boas, who had arrived from Porto with a reputation as one of Europe's brightest young managers.
The team initially played attractive attacking football, but results became increasingly inconsistent. Chelsea struggled against the stronger sides and eventually found themselves outside the Champions League places.
The turning point came in March.
After a 3–1 Champions League defeat away to Napoli, Villas-Boas was dismissed. Club legend Roberto Di Matteo took over as interim manager.
What happened next was remarkable.
Di Matteo restored confidence in the experienced core of the squad — particularly Drogba, Lampard, Terry and Čech — and Chelsea suddenly became extremely difficult to beat in knockout football.
FA Cup
Chelsea reached the FA Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.
They won 2–1, with goals from Ramires & Didier Drogba
It was Drogba's fourth FA Cup final goal, while Ashley Cole won his record seventh FA Cup winner's medal.
The victory gave Chelsea their seventh FA Cup.
But the biggest prize was still to come.
The Champions League run
Chelsea's Champions League campaign became legendary.
Round of 16 — Napoli
Chelsea appeared to be heading out after losing 3–1 in Naples.
But after Di Matteo's appointment, Chelsea produced an extraordinary comeback at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea 4–1 Napoli (a.e.t.)
The decisive goal came from Branislav Ivanović in extra time.
Quarter-final — Benfica
Chelsea defeated Benfica 3–1 on aggregate.
Semi-final — Barcelona
This was the defining tie.
Chelsea beat Barcelona 1–0 at Stamford Bridge, with Didier Drogba scoring.
At Camp Nou, Barcelona took a 2–1 lead and Chelsea were under enormous pressure.
But Fernando Torres famously scored the goal that sealed Chelsea's place in the final.
Barcelona 2–2 Chelsea
Chelsea won 3–2 on aggregate.
Chelsea had eliminated the defending champions despite being massive underdogs.
The final — Bayern Munich
19 May 2012 — Allianz Arena, Munich
Chelsea faced Bayern Munich in Bayern's own stadium.
Bayern dominated much of the match and eventually took the lead through Thomas Müller in the 83rd minute.
Then came one of the most famous moments in Chelsea history.
88th minute: Didier Drogba.
Juan Mata delivered the corner and Drogba rose to head Chelsea level.
Bayern 1–1 Chelsea.
Extra time followed.
Bayern were awarded a penalty, but Petr Čech saved Arjen Robben's spot-kick.
The match went to penalties.
Chelsea won 4–3 on penalties.
And the decisive penalty was taken by Didier Drogba.
Chelsea were finally European champions for the first time.

Didier Drogba
The undisputed hero.
Drogba scored 13 goals in all competitions, including:

His Champions League campaign alone produced 6 goals.
But his importance went beyond statistics. When Chelsea needed someone to deliver in enormous matches, Drogba repeatedly did it.
The 2012 Champions League final was arguably the perfect ending to his Chelsea career at that point.
Frank Lampard
Lampard remained one of Chelsea's most important players despite being 33.
He scored 16 goals in all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League, making him the club's leading scorer in both categories.
He also provided the assist for Drogba's winning goal in the FA Cup final.
His leadership was particularly important after Di Matteo took over.
Petr Čech
Čech was absolutely enormous during the Champions League run.
His defining moment came in Munich when he saved Robben's extra-time penalty, before making further saves during the shoot-out.
He then saved two penalties in the shoot-out itself.
Without Čech, Chelsea almost certainly don't win the Champions League.
Juan Mata
Mata was Chelsea's outstanding creative player during his first season at the club.
He joined from Valencia in summer 2011 and immediately became the team's main creative force.
His corner produced Drogba's equaliser in Munich.
Ramires
Ramires was incredibly important to Chelsea's Champions League success.
He scored 12 goals in all competitions, including the famous chip over Víctor Valdés at Camp Nou against Barcelona.
That goal was one of the greatest individual moments of Chelsea's European campaign.
He was suspended for the final, which made his semi-final contribution even more significant.
John Terry
The captain and defensive leader.
Terry was a huge presence throughout the campaign, although he unfortunately missed the Champions League final through suspension after being sent off against Barcelona.
He still played 31 Premier League matches and scored six league goals.
Ashley Cole
Cole was arguably the best left-back in the world at the time.
He played 32 Premier League matches and was particularly brilliant during the Champions League knockout stages.
His performance against Barcelona was outstanding.
He also became a record seven-time FA Cup winner.
Branislav Ivanović
One of the great unsung heroes of the campaign.
Ivanović could play centre-back or right-back and scored the extra-time winner against Napoli that completed Chelsea's dramatic comeback.
Chelsea's season statistics credit him with 5 goals, including two in the Champions League.
His versatility and physicality were invaluable.
Fernando Torres
Torres' first full season at Chelsea was inconsistent, but his campaign contained one unforgettable moment.
He scored the goal that eliminated Barcelona at Camp Nou.
He finished with 11 goals in all competitions.
That goal ultimately became one of the defining images of Chelsea's Champions League triumph.
Salomon Kalou
Kalou was no longer a regular starter under André Villas-Boas.
But Di Matteo brought him back into the squad, and Kalou became a useful and important squad player during the incredible run-in. His most important contribution :
The Champions League quarter-final against Benfica was particularly significant.
At the Estádio da Luz, Kalou scored Chelsea's only goal in a 1–0 first-leg victory. It was his 58th goal for Chelsea.
And then came an important detail: Kalou started both the FA Cup final and Champions League final.
David Luiz
David Luiz was one of the more unconventional defenders in European football.
His combination of strength, passing and attacking instinct made him perfectly suited to Chelsea's transition between managers.
He also played in the Champions League final despite missing some of the preceding games through injury.
For Chelsea supporters, 2011/12 is arguably the club's most iconic season ever.
