History
The 2011/12 season was the fourth and final season of Pep Guardiola as Barcelona manager. It was the end of one of the greatest eras in the club's history, with Barça continuing to play the possession-based, attacking football that had made Guardiola's team famous around the world.
Although Barcelona did not win La Liga or the Champions League, they still finished the campaign with four trophies: the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Copa del Rey.
Key Players
Lionel Messi
Quite simply, Messi had a phenomenal season.
He scored 50 La Liga goals, winning the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Boot. Across all competitions he scored an incredible 73 goals, then a record for a player in a European top-flight season.
He wasn't simply a goalscorer either. Guardiola increasingly used Messi as a false nine/playmaker, allowing him to drop deep, create chances and then arrive in the box.
Xavi
The heartbeat of Guardiola's midfield. Xavi controlled the tempo, dictated possession and supplied the passing that allowed Barcelona to dominate games.
He made 31 La Liga appearances, scoring 10 goals.
Andrés Iniesta
Iniesta provided the imagination and elegance alongside Xavi. His close control, dribbling and ability to find space made him one of the most important players in Guardiola's system.
He made 27 league appearances and scored twice.
Sergio Busquets
The perfect holding midfielder for Guardiola's system. Busquets gave Barcelona defensive protection while also being an excellent passer who could help them play through pressure.
He made 31 league appearances during the season.
Dani Alves
One of the most attacking full-backs in world football. Alves provided width on the right and developed a particularly effective understanding with Messi.
He made 33 league appearances, scoring twice and contributing nine assists.
Javier Mascherano
Originally a midfielder, Mascherano had developed into an excellent centre-back at Barcelona. His pace, tackling and reading of the game made him particularly valuable when injuries affected the defence.
He played 31 league matches.
Carles Puyol
The captain and defensive leader. Puyol brought aggression, courage and leadership to a side otherwise built around technical excellence.
Despite being 33, he remained a hugely important member of the squad.
Cesc Fàbregas
Signed from Arsenal in the summer of 2011, Fàbregas returned to the club where he had developed as a youngster.
He made 28 league appearances andscored nine goals, fitting into Guardiola's midfield/attacking system extremely well.
Alexis Sánchez
The Chilean forward was another major summer signing. He brought pace, direct running and goals to the attack, scoring 12 league goals in his first Barcelona season.
Pedro
Pedro remained an important part of the attacking rotation and scored five league goals. He also scored twice in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.
