The 2008/09 season was a memorable but ultimately frustrating one for Ajax. They had a talented attacking side, but inconsistency prevented them from winning a major trophy.
Ajax finished 3rd in the Eredivisie, collecting 68 points from 34 matches with a record of 21 wins, 5 draws and 8 defeats. They scored 74 goals and conceded 41.
This was Marco van Basten's first season as Ajax manager. He remained in charge until May 2009, when he resigned following a disappointing campaign. John Van 't Schip took over on an interim basis.
Key players
Luis Suárez
The star of the season.
Suárez was only 21/22 years old but was already becoming Ajax's attacking leader.
He finished second in the Eredivisie scoring chart behind AZ's Mounir El Hamdaoui and was voted Ajax Player of the Year by the supporters.
This was the season in which Suárez really began developing into the world-class forward he would eventually become.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
Huntelaar began the season as Ajax's established superstar striker but was sold to Real Madrid during the January transfer window.
His departure put even more responsibility on Suárez.
Miralem Sulejmani
Ajax had paid a huge fee for the young Serbian forward the previous summer, and he was an important part of the attack.
Thomas Vermaelen
One of the most important players in the defence.
Vermaelen made 31 Eredivisie appearances, starting all 31, and was one of Ajax's most consistent defenders. This was essentially the beginning of Vermaelen's rise toward the Belgian national team and eventually Arsenal.
Jan Vertonghen
Another young defender who became increasingly important. Vertonghen made 26 league appearances, scoring four goals, and appeared 35 times in all competitions.

These shirts are vintage, aged and normally used, so they will almost always show some degree of wear. Each listing carries a condition grade out of ten and any notable fault is called out in the description. Sizing on older shirts differs from modern sizing — always go by the pit-to-pit and length measurements listed, not the size on the label.
