History

Spain arrived at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a new generation of exciting talent and ambitions of repeating their historic 2010 triumph. Under manager Luis Enrique, La Roja played an attractive possession-based style of football, built around technical ability, intelligent movement and high pressing.

Their tournament began spectacularly with a 7-0 demolition of Costa Rica, followed by a 1-1 draw against Germany. However, a surprise 2-1 defeat to Japan meant Spain finished second in their group. Their campaign ended in the Round of 16 against Morocco, with the match finishing goalless before Spain lost 3-0 in the penalty shootout. Although the result was disappointing, the tournament marked the emergence of several exciting young stars who would become central to Spain's future success.
