History
Sport Club do Recife, commonly known as Sport Recife, is one of the most recognisable football clubs in Brazil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco. Founded in 1905, the club has a proud history built around its passionate supporters, its traditional red, black and gold colours, and its iconic lion emblem. Based at the Ilha do Retiro stadium in Recife, Sport has enjoyed regional success and memorable national achievements, including winning the Copa do Brasil in 2008.
The club’s identity is closely linked to the Leão do Norte, or Lion of the North, a nickname earned following a celebrated football tour to Belém in 1919. That achievement became an enduring part of Sport Recife’s heritage and inspired the lion imagery that remains central to the club’s identity.
