History
Portugal made history at UEFA EURO 2016 by winning their first major international trophy. Under manager Fernando Santos, Portugal progressed from the group stage with three consecutive draws before defeating Croatia 1–0 after extra time in the round of 16. They then beat Poland on penalties in the quarter-finals and Wales 2–0 in the semi-finals. In the final against hosts France, Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off injured in the first half, but Portugal secured a memorable 1–0 extra-time victory through Éder's 109th-minute goal. The triumph remains one of the greatest achievements in Portuguese football history.
