History
Argentina’s 2014 campaign in Brazil became one of the defining chapters of the national team’s modern history. Managed by Alejandro Sabella and captained by Lionel Messi, Argentina progressed through the group stage and knockout rounds to reach the World Cup final for the first time since 1990. They defeated Switzerland in extra time in the Round of 16 and overcame Belgium before beating the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-final. Their journey ended at the Maracanã, where Germany won 1–0 after extra time through Mario Götze’s 113th-minute goal. Messi received the tournament’s Golden Ball award as its best player.
