History

The 2022/23 season was a period of transition for Ajax, following the departure of manager Erik ten Hag to Manchester United and several important players from the squad that had won the Eredivisie title the previous season.

Ajax appointed Alfred Schreuder as head coach, but the campaign proved challenging. After a difficult spell, Schreuder departed in January 2023, with John Heitinga taking charge for the remainder of the season.

Eredivisie

Ajax finished third in the Eredivisie with 69 points, ending their run of three consecutive league titles. Feyenoord claimed the championship, while Ajax had to settle for a place in the following season's Europa League qualifying rounds.

KNVB Cup

Ajax reached the KNVB Cup final, facing fierce rivals PSV Eindhoven. The match finished 1–1 after extra time, with PSV winning 3–2 on penalties. It was another disappointment in a season that had promised much more.

European football

Ajax competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage but finished third in their group, moving into the Europa League knockout play-offs. They were subsequently eliminated by Union Berlin, losing 3–1 on aggregate.

Key players

Dušan Tadić

The captain and creative leader remained a central figure for Ajax, contributing goals, assists and experience during a difficult campaign.

Steven Bergwijn

The Netherlands international winger arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2022 and became an important attacking option, finishing as Ajax's leading Eredivisie scorer with 12 goals.

Mohammed Kudus

The Ghanaian attacker enjoyed an impressive season, showcasing his technical ability, versatility and eye for goal across domestic and European competitions.

Jurriën Timber

A key member of the defence, Timber continued to establish himself as one of Ajax's most promising young players and attracted significant attention from leading European clubs.

Edson Álvarez

The Mexican international provided defensive strength and tenacity in midfield, playing an important role in protecting the back line.

Brian Brobbey

The young Dutch striker featured prominently in attack, offering pace and physical presence as Ajax looked to rebuild their forward line.

Davy Klaassen

An experienced midfielder and former captain, Klaassen contributed goals, intelligent movement and leadership throughout the season.

The Shirt

The Ajax 2022/23 third shirt was created by Adidas in collaboration with Amsterdam-based fashion label Daily Paper. Released in August 2022, it celebrates Amsterdam's distinctive street-football culture and the city's generations of footballing talent.

The shirt features a predominantly golden design, with subtle black watermarks depicting nine prominent street-football courts across Amsterdam. These locations represent the neighbourhood pitches where young players develop their technique, creativity and love of the game.

A vertical red-and-black stripe runs down the centre, reflecting the colours of Amsterdam's city flag while echoing the iconic central stripe of Ajax's traditional home shirt. The white Ajax crest and sponsor branding complete the distinctive design.

The collaboration also includes special neck detailing inspired by Amsterdam's coat of arms, the city's founding year of 1275, its local nicknames and the Pan-African colours associated with Daily Paper's heritage.

This shirt stands out as a collectible piece because it combines Ajax's footballing identity with Amsterdam's street culture and contemporary fashion. It represents a distinctive collaboration between a historic European club and a brand rooted in the city's creative community.

How we verify authenticity

Every shirt is inspected by hand before it is listed. We check construction, neck and wash labels, stitching, sponsor and badge application, and the manufacturer product code against period-correct examples. Only shirts that pass are photographed, graded and added to the Vault. If a shirt is not an authentic original, we do not sell it.

Condition and sizing

These shirts are vintage, aged and normally used, so they will almost always show some degree of wear. Each listing carries a condition grade out of ten and any notable fault is called out in the description. Sizing on older shirts differs from modern sizing — always go by the pit-to-pit and length measurements listed, not the size on the label.

Why this shirt costs what it costs

Original, not a reproduction

A reproduction and an original can look identical in a listing photo. Drag the slider to see the difference, and what we checked on this exact shirt before it was listed.

  1. Embroidered crest with real stitch texture, never a flat print
  2. Period-correct fabric weave, weight and cut for the season
  3. Woven sponsor lettering applied the way that era did it
  4. Original neck and wash labels, matched to the year
  5. Manufacturer product code checked against the genuine one

Before you buy

Will it fit me?

Go by the flat measurements in the description, not the size on the label. Sizing on older shirts is nothing like modern sizing. Lay a shirt you already own flat, measure pit to pit and length, and compare. Not sure? Send us the listing and we will tell you honestly.

What condition is it in?

This shirt is vintage, aged and normally used, so it will show some degree of wear. The condition grade out of ten and any notable fault are stated in the description above. Nothing is hidden in the photographs.

What makes it an original?

Every shirt is an authentic original from its season, found and checked by hand before it is listed. Stock is limited and often a single piece, so when one sells it is usually gone for good.

How do I know it is authentic?

Every shirt is inspected by hand before listing: construction, neck and wash labels, stitching, sponsor and badge application, and the manufacturer product code, all against period-correct examples. If a shirt is not an authentic original, we do not sell it.

When will it arrive?

Orders are dispatched within 2 working days from Spain, fully tracked and insured at our expense. EU standard tracked is €15.99 up to 2 kg with estimated delivery in 3–5 days. Australia, Japan and Singapore are €19.95 for one shirt, €24.95 for two and €29.95 for three or four, with estimated delivery in 6–8 working days.

What if it is not right?

You have 7 days from delivery to request a return. Send it back unworn and in the same condition, with tags intact, and we refund the full purchase price. We do not accept refunds or exchanges for change of mind or incorrect sizing, so please review your purchase carefully before ordering. If it arrives damaged or not as described, we cover the return postage too.

Every shirt in the Matchday Vault is an authentic original — sourced, inspected and graded by hand, and photographed in detail before it is listed. No replicas. No modern reproductions. Ever.
